Why do I own so Many Cards?
For the first time in my collecting career, I’ve got to the point where I’m ready to let go of the majority of my collection, while saving the best of the best! Many collectors have made their way to this direction already, but when you truly care about the athlete you collect (Marc-Andre Fleury), it’s easy to find something to love about each and every card.
Now that I am living in a place that’s stunningly beautiful but expensive, it’s time to make the hard decisions to make sure that I am living comfortably while also being able to buy a card from time to time!
I wanted to take a moment to talk about the process I went through to narrow down my collection briefly, as we will five into this in more depth in a future podcast episode. My first question for you is this: When is the last time you evaluated your PC? Yes, some like buying and buying, and can afford to do so. Other buy to keep up with the next collector…I am guilty of this for sure. A small amount of us buy only what we adore! I do feel that more collectors are headed this way, and now I’ve made the massive decision to leave the “I need as much as possible” mentality behind for good!
Don’t get me wrong…rainbow chasing was an absolute pleasure. There was a goal to be completed, and the feeling of completing that goal lasted for months! However, if you look at the price of Marc-Andre Fleury’s cards, that is a nearly impossible task financially. At this point in my life, I have to prioritize collecting a few cards here and there that fit into these categories, or I will have to pass:
Unique piece of memorabilia - Glove, Blocker, Pad, Webbing, 3+ color patch
Stunning design - A design that stands above all the rest in the set
Unique insert - Stained glass, fanimation, or something else that’s new and unique
It HAS to be special enough to go in the display case
Now that I am following these guidelines, I have ZERO, Fleury cards incoming. The only two cards that are on the way are going into my $10 and under binder. I like to have this because binders was where it all started for us as kids. Having a reminder like that to look through is always special. It was NOT easy to come to this conclusion, but it’d one I think we all eventually get to as we cannot keep these forever!
Have you reached a point where it’s time to thin out the main pc? I’d love to hear your thoughts below! Have a great weekend everyone!
This is everything I am keeping + what is in the display cases!
This is everything I am willing to let go!
